MA, RCC, CCC

My name is Sebastian Wingfield and I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC #10006435) and a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC #22622). Beyond my master's degree in counselling psychology, I have extensive training as an existential therapist and integrate elements of humanistic, psychodynamic, and contemporary cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques in my work to form an individualized treatment plan that is co-authored with the client.

My Approach to Therapy:

When most people hear the term "existential therapist," they might think about different ideas like "existential dread or crisis" and someone in a scratchy turtleneck who just wants to talk about death and meaning. And yes, these are technically existential concepts, but my approach is a little different. Without getting into too many details, what's essential is this: My aim each session is to help clients become more of who they really are, rather than who they should be. The more experience I've gained as a counsellor, the more I have become convinced that when clients can expand their ability to be who they really are, the more meaningful life can be. This process will look different for each client, as my approach is non-prescriptive; but it is guided heavily by principles of therapy that are collaborative, person-centered, trauma-informed, and attachment-informed.
For those interested in the more technical language of my approach, my theoretical orientation is grounded in Existential Analysis. Existential Analysis can be defined as "a phenomenological and person-oriented psychotherapy, with the aim of leading the person to (mentally and emotionally) free experiences, to facilitate authentic decisions and to bring about a truly responsible way of dealing with life and the world... The aim of Existential Analysis is to help each person find a way of living to which they can give their inner consent to their own actions (“affirmation of life”). In short, to find and live out an inner ‘yes’ to one’s life" (Existential Analysis Canada).
At a clinical level, I have trained in a variety of research-informed therapeutic modalities including Lifespan Integration Therapy, Observed and Experiential Integration Therapy, and Exposure and Response Therapy for OCD.

I primarily work with adults and am open to working with youth ages fourteen and older.

My typical areas of practice are:

  • Anxiety (generalized, social, phobia)
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Trauma and Abuse
  • Depression, Grief, and Loss
  • Elite Athletes/Peak Performance
  • Self-Discovery/Development/Identity
  • Enneagram Coaching
  • Spiritual Crisis/Trauma/Deconstruction
  • Worldview Consolidation and Value Conflicts
  • Substance Use and Addiction
  • Couples Therapy
  • Relationship Dynamics (workplace, friends)
In addition to my clinical practice, I am available for professional consultation, speaking engagements, as well as leading workshops related (but not limited) to the enneagram, grief, boundaries, and foundations of existential analysis.

About Me:
Prior to becoming a counsellor, I grew up in a military family in the United States and played semi-professional soccer. I love spending time with my family and friends, and my hobbies include disc golf, chess, rock climbing, and various board games!

Coming through my own mental health journey, where I felt exhausted and stuck -- navigating abusive relationships, family with complex trauma, and even pressures from soccer -- I've been incredibly impacted by the counselling services that I have received in my life which helped me find: relief from anxiety, healthier relationships, self-acceptance, and a greater sense of meaning in my life. These experiences have really informed my practice, where I look to help others find their personal "yes" to life!
